China has heavily invested in Australia in recent years. Their first interest was revealed to be in the mining industry. However latest data has revealed that China has also heavily invested into transport and real estate as well. Although most of the Chinese investment projects are privately owned, the new data has revealed that the amount of state-owned investment project makes about half of it in value.
The Australian National University has found that Chinese-owned companies have invested over $40.4 billion in the last four years.
In terms of states, New South Wales has received the biggest investment from the Chinese-owned companies which is hardly a surprise because most of the population lives there. The NSW has received a total of $15 billion in the last four years.
South Australia became the focus of Chinese investment in 2016 when it caught the interest of Chinese private gas distributor ENN. ENN bought a large stake in Santos (an Australian energy company).
